Inclusion at the time of school-work alternance: new challenges and perspectives for connection between school, formation and world of job

2019

The historical moment that we are experiencing is characterized by several technological changes as well as by demographic ones. So, the world of work is even more flexible and in continuous evolution. It follows that it’s increasingly present the need to promote an authentic knowledge that can combine theory and practice, knowledges and abilities with the aim to develop competences. So, school becomes the educative agency that has to combine formative needs of individual with competences required by the job market, with the purpose of offering equal opportunities to all its students; this is the perspective offered by Capability Approach, whose declination in a scholastic context can allow…

A dynamic business modelling approach to design and experiment new business venture strategies

2018

Abstract Business Modelling has evolved as a key activity to reflect new business venture strategy by framing the way a firm will operate and how it will function in achieving its goals (e.g., profitability, growth, innovation, social impact). However, scholars and practitioners have criticized the adoption of a too static perspective in the design and use of conventional Business Model representations. Such a static perspective prevents nascent entrepreneurs experimenting with their Business Models and, as a result, identifying the most effective strategies, especially in terms of business sustainability and profitability. In this paper, we argue that combining conventional Business Model …

Technology-Supported Educational Innovations in Finland and Hong Kong: A Tale of Two Systems

2005

The paper presents a comparison of case studies about innovative ICT-supported pedagogical practices in two educational systems, namely Finland and Hong Kong. The two systems were selected for this in-depth comparison for three main reasons. First, Finland and Hong Kong performed well in several international comparative studies of educational achievement. Second, the case studies collected via the SITES Module 2 indicated rather different profiles between Finnish and Hong Kong schools in terms of ICT infrastructure and pedagogical practices. Third, further analysis of the case studies data indicated differences in emergent pedagogical characteristics between the cases collected in Asia and…

Tackling wicked issues in performance management and governance of health prevention: an empirical analysis of vaccination strategies in Italy

Performance management (PM) in the public sector is a research stream that grasped much of the attention of public administration and management scholars in the last decade (Bouckaert & Halligan, 2007; Hall, 2017; Douglas & Ansell, 2020). This is mainly related to the ever-evolving context in which PM regimes apply. Our society and its current challenges are indeed growing in complexity so that these last have been defined by modern literature as “wicked” (Rittel & Weber, 1973; Head & Alford, 2015). Wicked does not mean “evil” but it refers to the impossibility to share an understanding of societal problems and their definition. According to Head & Alford (2015),“wickedn…

Net Zeb case studies. Leaf House

2015

In this book, accomplished international experts present advanced modeling techniques as well as in-depth case studies meant to lead designers towards the optimal use of simulation tools for the design of net-zero energy buildings (Net ZEBs). The book discusses different design processes and tools used in designing Net ZEBs, starting from the fundamental concepts, design strategies, and technologies. These processes and tools are then evaluated by referring to four diverse Net ZEBs where the authors were intimately involved from the design concept to operation. The high resolution measured performance data from these case studies are compared with the predictions made using the respective d…

Developing Peer Corrective Skills in Business Letter Writing in English as a Foreign Language

2019

Peer corrective feedback (PCF) implementation is a topical issue in writing skills development at tertiary level. Those researchers who explore the application of PCF in higher education (e.g. Liu and Sadler, 2003; Hyland, K. and Hyland, F., 2006) admit that students face difficulties in providing qualitative feedback that determines the effectiveness of this teaching tool. Therefore, the goal of this paper was to investigate what actions could be taken in order to develop students’ PCF skills and, consequently, foster the quality of PCF. The primary research method was a case study in which the participants were 24 second-year undergraduates majoring in English as a Foreign Language (EFL…

A collective case study of athletic identity and successful injury rehabilitation

2015

A severe injury is an identity threatening situation for competitive athletes. Previous literature suggests that having a strong athletic identity can be beneficial for the athlete when injured. To the date there has been little research on how athletic identity is managed during that challenging time of injury. The purpose of this study was to explore how athletic identity is managed during the injury and rehabilitation phase before returning to competitive sport. Knowing the determinants of athletic identity management allows practitioners to adjust their interventions toward specific issues when working with injured athletes. The present study is a qualitative, collective case study. Her…

CLIL and Literary Education: Teaching Foreign Languages and Literature from an Intercultural Perspective—The Results of a Case Study

2020

This article intends to explore the relationship between CLIL and literary education by considering the results of a case study involving the teaching of foreign literatures from an intercultural perspective in Italian secondary schools. In the first part we introduce a model of literary and intercultural communicative competence and in the second part we present a case study implemented in three secondary schools in Northern Italy. A qualitative research design was implemented and data were collected through interviews with teachers and questionnaires answered by students. The results revealed that while teachers focus on the intercultural dimension of literature only in terms of the expan…

The development of novice top management team's heuristics in SME internationalization

2016

The importance of heuristics in terms of strategy work is highlighted in many existing studies. However, little is known about how the ability to utilize heuristics develops during novice top management team’s first internationalization. Utilizing qualitative and inductive grounded theory building methods this study aims to increase knowledge about the role of heuristics during top management team’s first SME internationalization and the role of experience in utilization of heuristics and decision-making process. The findings contribute to literature of strategy and its microfoundations by showing four stages of development process and highlighting the various roles of relevant experience i…

Extending the international new venture phenomenon to digital platform providers : A longitudinal case study

2018

People increasingly interact with services enabled by digital platforms. This has been a consequence of the digitalization of artifacts, which has transmuted traditional businesses into digital forms. With the increasing digitalization and modularization of services, digital platforms have given many digital service providers possibilities to scale globally, and to rapidly transcend national borders by serving multi-sided markets. However, we still know very little about how digital platform providers actually internationalize their services, or how they make their platforms available for global markets. In this paper, we contribute to the increasing literature on digital-based INVs, examin…
